Transact-SQL User-Defined Functions has been published! Take a look at it right now! Back in September, 2003, Volume 1 Issue #46 featured the user contributed UDF, NumberToWords by Srinivas Sampath. It converted an integer to the equivalent words, so long as the number was less than one hundred. Another reader Nick Barclay, from Australia, picked up a copy of my book and chose to upgrade NumberToWords to support larger numbers. He set his version a few weeks ago. He made a big improvement in the function and allowed it to handle numbers up to a trillion. When I say trillion, I'm using the word in the way that people in the US and in the scientific community use it. There are differences in how numbers are named in the rest of the world. If you're interested, I found the names for the number groups over a million in both the US and other places on this page: http://www.jimloy.com/math/billion.htm I took Nick's version and extended it even further. Why stop at a trillion? A numeric data type can hold up to 38 digits, so I decided to handle up to 38 digits. Along the way I made a few minor improvements in the code to reduce the number of statements that are executed and to reformatted it in the way that I write T-SQL. Here's the CREATE FUNCTION script:
